Livestreaming goes on the road

Livestreaming goes on the road

Momentum’s broadcast team has proven success in producing livestreamed events outside of its North Sydney studio.

Momentum Media showcases it’s livestreaming capabilities outside of it’s North Sydney studio.

During the lead up to last week’s Defence Connect webcast an opportunity arose. All external speakers were based in Canberra and so a decision was made to relocate the livestream to broadcast live from Northrop Grumman’s offices in ACT on Thursday, 23 February 2023.

There were a number of factors identified which would be critical to the success of the event which were the size of the room, the light and sound in the room, a good cabled internet connection, and access to the room for 24 hours.

The latter was particularly important as speakers would be arriving early the next day — too early to spend time on setting up — and so colleagues in Momentum Media’s broadcast team, Enoch Chieng and Alex Staples packed up the remote streaming kit, jumped into a van and drove down to set up the day prior.

Once they were happy with the room, all that was left was to mic up the speakers in the morning and go through any final briefing notes.

The livestream featured Defence Connect editor Liam Garman; Terry Saunder — director at Northrop Grumman Australia; Major General (Ret’d) Mick Ryan, AM — Adjunct Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (US) and non-resident fellow of the Lowy Institute; Malcom Davis — senior analyst in defence strategy and capability, ASPI; and Hugh Webster, CTO at Boeing Australia.

During the live session the panel explored the future of the Australian Defence Force and touched upon the challenges of an evolving battlespace, the need for the ADF to co-ordinate and act uniformly across all domains, the opportunity for a cohesive, integrated environment and much more.

Prior to the recent Defence Connect livestream there was a remote broadcast for Cyber Daily. Back in October last year, the Momentum team were exhibiting at Land Forces 2022 at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre. Live from the event, Enoch Chieng lead the livestream which featured Phil Tarrant — director of defence, security and aerospace at Momentum Media, Major General (Ret’d) Dr Marcus Thompson, AM — inaugural Head of Information Warfare for the Australian Defence Force, and Adam McCarthy — CEO of ParaFlare. The trio discussed the very timely learnings in the aftermath of the Optus hack. The livestream is available to view here.

Momentum Media’s senior manager – production, Lyndsey Fall said: “This is an exciting evolution in our livestreaming capabilities.

“We’ve been producing professional-level livestreams for quite some time now, long before the pandemic, and with speakers based all around the country and abroad. This is a great offering we now have to be able to take the livestream out of the studio and on the road to stream from anywhere it takes us.”
