Momentum Media is proud to join a community of changemakers in 1HumanRace, a cause run by So They Can, to raise valuable funds to empower vulnerable girls in Kenya.
The proposition is simple (sort of): walk, run, cycle or swim (or anything else you can think of) 85 kilometres across the month of March 2023 to raise funds.
This will enable non-profit organisation So They Can to deliver education, support and empowerment projects to vulnerable girls across Baringo County, Kenya.
Momentum Media viewed this as a prime opportunity to not only back a worthy cause but also to stay fit and enjoy fresh air and sunshine while having fun.
Named the #85for85 challenge, So They Can is asking the community to participate in the #1HumanRace by ‘moving’ 85 kilometres during March to support the 85 per cent of girls in Baringo County (some as young as nine years old) who suffer from cruel practices such as female genital cutting and child marriage.
The goal is to challenge these statistics through education and empowerment programs. According to So They Can, in Baringo County, an educated girl is seen as a person with human rights, while an uneducated girl is seen as the property of her father and brothers to be sold for commercial gain.
Momentum Media participants kicked off the challenge on Wednesday, 1 March and have already covered plenty of kilometres.
Momentum Markets’ director and enthusiastic participant Alex Whitlock encouraged his team members to either join the challenge or support a colleague by donating.
“We’re proud to once again get behind So They Can to help them to deliver education to Kenya’s most disadvantaged communities,” Mr Whitlock said.
“Their main goal is to create better outcomes for women and girls who face a bleak future and we’re here to support them. Together, we can make a difference.”
#1HumanRace is based on the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which means that “I am because we are”. Challenging these statistics will require support and funds from the entire community to allow So They Can to expand its work in the region.
For those stuck for ideas on how to get involved and select a challenge that works for them, So They Can has provided numerous options based on pathways chosen by past participants.
Participants could do any of the following:
To enter the challenge, simply create a fundraising page and register.
Participants will gain access to their own fundraising page to enable them to ask their family, friends and colleagues to join or support them.
They can share their progress on their blog, Facebook or Instagram using the #1HumanRace hashtag.
