Momentum Media and law brand Lawyers Weekly with principal partner LOD are thrilled to launch the Corporate Counsel Summit 2023.
The fifth annual Corporate Counsel Summit will return in 2023 and bring legal professionals and the industry together on 25 May 2023 at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.
Run with the support of principal partner LOD, the summit will demonstrate how in-house counsel can demonstrate their value to their organisations by becoming business strategists – particularly as organisations weather the storm of economic headwinds and prepare for a possible recession.
Expectations from in-house counsel continue to evolve, with businesses and clients counting on their legal teams to provide strategic input, manage legal services panels effectively, integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies and frameworks, and bolster their cyber security posture and protect them from cyber threats.
In this changing environment, the Corporate Counsel Summit’s jam-packed agenda will arm legal professionals with the tools to ensure that they can become a key business contributor through communication, action, and accountability.
This year’s summit will feature a heartrending keynote from writer, activist, and recovering lawyer Tarang Chawla, who will share how the shocking murder of his little sister Nikita steered him away from a career in law and onto a completely different path.
He will highlight why in-house lawyers are critical to a business’ success through personal anecdotes and data around diversity, equality, and inclusion.
The one-day conference has curated a range of other speakers – including general counsel, chief legal officers, legal operations professionals, and company secretaries – to equip in-house legal teams with the knowledge and skills to grow and prosper.
Delegates will learn how to understand business pressure points, strategies, and objectives, and how to effectively communicate the legalities involved in management decision-making to secure business and board buy-in.
Throughout the conference, attendees will learn about how to navigate their career through the Great Resignation and the potential losses and gains that it could bring.
They will also learn about how to strike the right balance when engaging their external legal panel by running an effective tender process to choose a panel that aligns with their organisation’s objectives, and taking centre stage to push for more innovative fee models.
Alongside this, speakers will unpack the approaches organisations are taking with their ESG frameworks, what is and is not working, and how in-house counsel can play a leading role in ensuring that organisations implement robust reporting policies (including effectively dealing with the intersectionality of ESG).
With the recent Optus and Medibank data breaches having brought cyber security into sharper focus, the conference includes a must-attend session on how in-house counsel can audit their organisation’s cyber security posture and implement long-term measures to improve its cyber security maturity.
Speakers will discuss how legal teams could ensure that the organisation’s policies and controls comply with the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 and privacy laws.
The 2023 Corporate Counsel Summit is targeted at in-house counsel, thought leaders, and career-focused lawyers to arm them with the skills, legislative updates, and strategies to ensure that they are surrounded by the best people and can get the best out of them.
Speaking about the conference and LOD’s involvement as principal partner, LOD head of business operations Anita Thompson said: “You can’t underestimate the importance of in-house lawyers coming together and learning about new and evolving ways of working and so we’re excited to partner with Lawyers Weekly once again to bring the Corporate Counsel Summit to Sydney.
“At LOD, we see firsthand the ways in which in-house legal teams are innovating, growing and strengthening, so it is fantastic to help provide an opportunity to share experiences, successes and hear from some inspiring, industry leading speakers.
“It promises to be a brilliant, insightful event during the day and of course a celebration in the evening with the Corporate Counsel Awards.”
Lawyers Weekly editor Jerome Doraisamy said: “The annual Corporate Counsel Summit is one of the highlights of our calendar. The extraordinary insights that we, and lawyers across the board, are able to glean from the talented and insightful presenters, are always as illuminating as they are instructive.”
“As always, we are grateful to LOD for its ongoing support of Lawyers Weekly, and for our events.”
